What to Do If You Receive a Disconnection Notice from RVEC

If you receive a notice from Raccoon Valley Electric Cooperative (RVEC) that your electric service will be disconnected due to a past-due bill, you have options. You must act before the shut-off date.

You can:

Pay the bill in full
Enter into a reasonable payment plan with RVEC (see below)
Apply and be approved for low-income energy assistance (see below)
Provide a doctor’s note if someone in the home has a serious health condition (see below)

Dispute the bill if you believe there is an error (see below)

If you’re unable to pay in full:

Contact RVEC as soon as possible.
RVEC will work with you to set up a 12-month (or longer) payment plan, depending on your financial situation.
If you default on a previous plan, a second agreement may be possible under certain conditions.
If a payment is missed, RVEC may disconnect service with just one day’s notice unless the full balance is paid, or a new plan is agreed upon.

You may qualify for help through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP):

Apply through your local community action agency.
Find your local agency by dialing 2-1-1, calling (800) 244-7431, or visiting hhs.iowa.gov/liheap.
Notify RVEC once you’ve applied.
Important: Once your service is shut off, it will not be reconnected based on LIHEAP approval.
If approved, your electric service is protected from shut-off between November 1 and April 1.

RVEC can disconnect the electric service:

Monday through Friday, between 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
With a minimum 12-day written notice
With 1-day notice if a payment agreement is broken

RVEC cannot disconnect service:

On nights, weekends, or holidays
If the forecast is below 20°F in the next 24 hours
During November 1 – April 1, if you’ve been approved for energy assistance
If you’re in a dispute and have paid the undisputed amount
If a household member is deployed in military service, or for 90 days after deployment ends (RVEC must be notified in advance)
